"Navman Wireless helps us better understand our business and makes managing jobs in remote areas much easier."
Carpentaria Contracting, located in a remote region of North Queensland, carries out a wide range of services and has a wide range of vehicles and equipment. They do varied construction and electrical maintenance, grounds maintenance work and they hire out machinery. Carpentaria also has marine vessels and a helicopter that they hire.
They wanted to install a tracking system in order to better understand vehicle usage and reduce fuel costs. Asa King, Operations Manager for Carpentaria Contracting says, "Most of our vehicles go home with employees and we were seeing that vehicles were being used on the weekend when they shouldn't have been. We needed a way of verifying time and kilometres travelled. We also wanted a way to prove to clients that we were on site when we said we were."
Mr King says they looked at different systems and found the cost of Navman Wireless quite reasonable. "It was easy to install and it's easy for everyone to use," states Mr King.
Today, Carpentaria Contracting has Navman Wireless Tracking installed in 40 vehicles, in two of their marine vessels and in their helicopter.
More Accurate Timesheets and Less Unauthorised Vehicle Usage
Mr King says that he told his team over a few meetings that they would be installing Navman Wireless. "We had two types of responses," explains Mr King. "Most embraced the idea because they understood that they'd be able to manage their time better and provide more accurate timesheets. They wouldn't have to run around with their diaries anymore." There were some team members who saw Navman Wireless as an invasion of privacy at ï¬rst but after time came to understand that the system is beneï¬cial to the whole company.
Mr King comments, "Before Navman Wireless, there was a niggling paranoia about what the guys were doing with their vehicles in the evening and on the weekend. By installing Navman Wireless, we've saved a fortune in fuel costs and unauthorised usage has been completely eliminated.
Better Occupational Health and Safety Reporting
Navman Wireless has made Carpentaria Contracting a more efficient company and a safer company as well.
"We work in very remote areas and we work in the mines so occupational health and safety reporting is very important. Navman Wireless's overspeed report is just one of the reports that has made a big difference to our business. This year, we've only had one report of someone going too fast - that's a deï¬nite reduction over last year," explains Mr King.
In regard to their helicopter, Navman Wireless offers proof that the helicopter has arrived at its location. "We put a Geofence around the helicopter's location and the system sends us an email when it arrives so we know that it's safe," says Mr King.
Improved Customer Service and Customer Satisfaction
The Navman Wireless OnlineAVL2 is installed on ï¬ve computers in the ofï¬ce and is used by department supervisors and people that do scheduling. Because the schedulers can see where the tradesmen are at all times, they can send the closest vehicle if an urgent maintenance call comes in.
Mr King says, "Clients appreciate that we can tell them where a tradesman is. We can literally tell them that he's just pulling in to their site or he's ï¬ve minutes away." By setting up Geofences around frequently visited sites and using the Site Report, Mr King says that they can forecast how much time they'll have to spend on a site and how many pieces of equipment they'll need for the job.
Client discrepancies have been reduced because Carpentaria Contracting can easily send a client a Site Report that shows exactly how long a vehicle was at a site. "Most clients are quite impressed,"
comments Mr King.
